21-06-2007 _ Baku, Azerbaijan _ Running a completion on West Azeri

19 days on the West Azeri platform, from the 21st of June to the 9th of July.

This job is identical to the job I was just on a couple of weeks ago on the Central Azeri platform. The major difference this time is that there are only two guys on this job who have any experience with what we are doing; myself and Nigel, and Nigel should be supervising me :-) Not really possible for the 24 hour operations which we need to run.

The job started ok but throughout the lower completion we found out that lots of our equipment had been damaged in transit so we were forced to use backups. Luckily we will have a lot of time after this job to clear house and get everything ready to go again. Below are some pictures of a small drum of control line which was damaged when someone dropped the lifting slings on it. There is also a picture and Video of a packer assembly with damaged control line through it. The control line shouldnt move like this, sometime in transit it has been pulled through some metal metal ferrule seals to make slack. End result we had to run the backup assembly and we will need to spend a couple of days on the base sorting this packer out.

After a variety of crew changes and equipment failures the job finally started coming to an end. Everything started falling in place and it looked like everything would be ok. Unfortunately on this job everything that can go wrong, went wrong.

At the end of the job we do a flow test of the DTS flow line loop and then pressure test it to 10kpsi. At this point everything is done and dusted and we rig down and go home. Unfortunately luck wasnt on my side this day, circulation was perfect but when we started pressuring up the system the control line ruptured downhole at about 7kpsi. At this point instead of going home I had to attend some meeting about the failure. So all the work I have done in the past 19 days has been a waste of time and it will take many more days and perhaps weeks to resolve this problem. By resolve I do not mean fix, it is buggered, we just need to seal it up and then move on to the next well. x millions dollars down the drain..

Hopefully my next job goes a bit smoother than this one.....
