This weekend six of us decided to go to Munich and Salzburg. The plan was to fly to Munich and then get a 2 hour train to Salzburg, spend a day in Salzburg, train back to Munich, day in Munich then fly back to Paris CDG.
This adventure started in CDG airport where one of our party had reserved tickets by phone (because his credit card didnt work online), but unfortunately Lufthansa decided to cancel his reservation and demanded about 600 euros if he wanted to fly with the rest of the group. End result he decided to wait the night at the airport and fly for under 200 early Sat morning.
Once 5 of us arrived in Munich we got a train and made our way to a youth hostel. Before going to bed we had a brief walk around the youth hostel and discovered that it is in a very dodgy area. This was a bit surpriing because the train station it is next to is Munichs main station. We had a macdonalds and then went to bed. The following morning a couple of guys went to pick up Fahad from the airport and bring him to our hostel, from there we made our way to Salzburg. One thing strange about train tickets in Munich is that they have group tickets for up to 5 people; these tickets cost only slightly more than the price for one person; nothing like the UK.
We arrived in Salzburg and then went on the hunt for a youth hostel. Youth hostels are a good source of info about what to do in the area and how to get there. The first hostel we arrived to was shut, and closed for the season. The second hostel was open but explained that it was the offseason and it was a bit dead in Salzburg. One thing we especially wanted to see was an Ice cave and get a tour of that, unfortunately this place is only open during peak season. So instead of doing this we went to the fortress and spent quite a few hours there.
Before going to the fortress we broke into two groups of three. One group who was going to stay the night in Salzburg and the other which were going to travel back to Munich that night, I was in the latter with Alejandra and Rigeuns. The fortress is shown in quite a few of the pictures and sits ontop of a big hill. To get to and from the fortress we took a small train, the cost of which was 10 euros and included entry fees for all the parts of the fortress.
The fortress was pretty huge and had various exibits, one being an audio tour describing how the fortress changed over hundreds of years and a fair bit to its connection to the sale of Salt. There was also a significant amount of war related things, guns, rocket launchers etc from the European world wars, I am not too sure about their connection to the fortress though.
After the fortress we walked around Salzburg a bit and then went to a chinese restaurent for a buffet meal. The meal cost around 8 euros per person (all you can eat) and only 2 more euros each for the drinks. A fine total of 10 euros each, that was extreme value for money. After stuffing our faces with food we walked back to the train station and got the next train to Munich. Once in Munich we checked into the same hostel again, went out for a few drinks and then back to bed, ready for the next day........
