15-10-2006 _ Baku, Azerbaijan _ Trip into Center of Baku
|
Today is my first real day off since I joined the company two weeks ago. I decided to get a bus into the center of Baku at 12noon after breakfast. The hotel provides a free bus into and out of the city so I hopped on one for a 15 minute bus ride. On the way I saw a couple of nodding donkeys pumping away and what looked like some strange sea port.
Video from bus of some oil type development Once in the city I made my way to a phone shop to buy a new sim card for my phone. Orange appear not to allow roaming in Azerbaijan so I took that sim card out and will start using it again when I go home. The sim card cost 6 new Bir Manats, about 4 British Pounds, I also brought 10 Manats of credit which should be equal to about 250 text messages. Hopefully I wasn’t ripped off by the guys at the shop. My phone number is 50 4657893 and I was told that a +99450 prefix is needed to call this number from abroad. The network is called SimSim. Once my phone was sorted out I went for a walk around the city. My first impression was how bad the traffic was. The main road by the coast has a few lanes of traffic and no apparent way to cross without risking your life. After a long wait I managed to get across and took a few pictures. One thing I have noticed is the number of wild cats; everywhere you look there are cats walking around or sleeping. I took a picture of one cat and may build a cat gallery if I see any funny looking cats. |
