As OFS-1 was heading to an end, it was finally time to have a look around the site. Everything at this site is used for training as there is no oil in Paris :-)
We were lead in two groups into a storage room with generic coveralls, boots, hardhats, gloves and safety glasses. After battling to find the right size coverall and boots, we were lead outside down a staircase. Once at the bottom of the stairs everyone who didn’t use all the safety techniques discussed earlier that week were sent back up to try again. The two things they were looking for where a good grip on the handrail and sidestepping down the staircase.
Apparently I got it wrong the first time along with nearly everyone else. I was holding both handrails on the way down because my boots didn’t fit very well, but obviously it wasn’t enough :-) On the second attempt I was waved through for doing it right, unfortunately this wasn’t true for everyone else and one guy ended up repeating it another two times.
We were then given a tour of the site and a couple of groups of four people were set on connecting up a pipe to a oil distribution node. The first group started well by finding the right connector but failed to select the right pipe to screw into it. The second group also failed to find the right pipe and were eventually told which to use. Quite the embarrassing failure for them :-) Once the pipe was in place they were given a sledge hammer to knock the screw mechanism together tighter. Safely swinging a sledge hammer at a small target is harder than u'd think.
I was in the group of four in charge of taking it apart, a very simple task by comparison.
