06-01-2008 _ Baku, Azerbaijan _ Baku Snow

Back from offshore and now it's snowing

After a highly successful but inconvenient 10 days offshore I returned to a very cold Baku. When I was offshore there were some rumours of a tiny amount of snow falling in Baku but nothing confirmed. My hope was that it was snow really badly and I would get stuck offshore waiting for the weather to clear. The helicopters don't fly in really cold snowy weather and every extra day offshore would be more money in the bank. Unfortunately I am not lucky.

I flew back on Saturday and the snow started on Sunday. It continued to snow on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday, and the snow got thicker and thicker. There was a good 15 inches which accumulated on some sun beds on my balcony, serious stuff. Luckily it was decided that it was too dangerous for the busses to take me to work on Monday and Tuesday so I got the days off :-) I did a little work from home but nothing too stressful, mainly just worked on the report from the job I had just done. I managed to get to work on Wednesday but the bus was half an hour late; Wednesday was spent doing my vacation expenses. I totaled about 2000 dollars which I will claim back from the company for my holiday to Cuba.

Work has once again restarted but it has been far too cold to really get much done, thick ice everywhere and about -5degrees. Most of the pictures below are at the start of the snow before it started getting deep.
