Royal Palace and Spider Market
In the morning we set off for a tour of the Royal Palace in Phnom Penh before starting a long journey by bus to Slem Reap. Half way through our journey we stopped off at a large "service station" which had a spider and other insect market.
In classic Cambodian form, we were surrounded by lots of very young girls as soon as we got off the bus. Some of them were selling small bags of pineapple, clothes, silk and other miscellaneous fruit. At this market the stalls were selling fried crickets, spiders and other things which I couldn't identify. The special thing about this market was that the young girls carried around large spiders on their clothes and put them on the tourists in an attempt to provoke a reaction and force a sale. The first spider appeared on Steves' back and later other girls brought in other spiders so we all had a couple. One of the women on our tour group was really afraid of spiders and refused to get off the bus : - )
You can see my spider below, it wasn't very active, but moved around a little : - )
